The lid opens by pushing down the back edge which levers up the front. It is hallmarked for London 1871 with the maker's mark of Wright & Davies. The inside also has the fine inscirption'Thompson & Co. 8 New Bond St' which I think is that of the original retailer.
This box is in lovely condition for its age and the hinge is nice and tight so it closes securely although it simply rests shut. As you will see from the photos, there is a pinhead dint to the lid and 2 to the base. There is some wear to the strike plate and a groove running across the middle which will be the result of a good amount of use. The gilding has no wear but there are some areas of staining through contact with Vestas over the years. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN PAGE TO SEE MORE IMAGES Approximate Measurements.
