Victorian Sterling Silver Rose Bowl, Bonbon bowl, London, 1883 Martin Hall    Victorian Sterling Silver Rose Bowl, Bonbon bowl, London, 1883 Martin Hall
Victorian Sterling Silver Rose Bowl, London, 1883 by makers Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall. A hybrid oval bowl that might be too large for sugar and too fancy and impractical as a rose or posy bowl. Certainly a very beautiful posy bowl. An exquisitely detailed embossed bowl showing a gadrooned wavy rim with miniature crosses stamped below the rim as a stylised floral feature.

Beneath this, the bowl is circumscribed with details of embossed flowers joined by swags. This feature surmounts embossed leaf/acanthus detail that is replicated on the pedestal foot, also embossed. The bowl has two blank oval cartouches on the sides that could be used to inscribe monograms if so desired.

The base/foot is stamped with the number'3669', possibly a stock/pattern for the retailer/maker or a registered design number. The interior of the bowl shows some gilding which has mostly been rubbed off over time. The hallmarks (excluding makers mark) are rubbed but legible. The makers mark is recognisable by the RM into a diamond though the EH below shows only part of the'H' from EH, the'E' is no longer legible. The floor of the bowl shows evidence of use and polishing over time with a few scratches, micro-blemishes and pinprick type dents. The base of the bowl has a few small nicks in the foot-rim. There is a slight warp to the base which I would not like to fiddle with as it is barely noticeable. There's a slight rock of less than one mm. The design of the base would make this correctable in professional hands. In overall appearance, the bowl looks superb and the condition notes should not detract from the enjoyment of this very decorative piece, no matter what its intended use. In this condition, reasonable offers will be considered. Item is insured, tracked and signed for.
