Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine (Notebook, Pincushion, Pencil etc)-H/M 1890

  
This gorgeous chatelaine is made from sterling silver. The decorative clip has been cast and pierced and features a masque amid scrolls with a hinged clip to the back. There are 5 chains with decorative links (beads & flowers) and each has its original dog clip.

The tools include a notebook with 3 bone leaves and a pincushion - both are original. There is a slide pencil and a pull-out steel button hook & blade - these are of the correct period but I'm not sure if they are original. The ladies' pocket watch is a later addition and, unfortunately, it doesn't work and is missing its glass. The clip is clearly hallmarked for London 1890 with the maker's mark'J. P' but, unfortunately, I haven't been able to identify it.

Each dog clip has matching part marks. The notebook and pincushion have identical marks. Unfortunately, I can't find hallmarks on the pencil or button hook but I've personally tested them and found them to be sterling silver. From their style, I would estimate them to date to around the same time as the chatelain. The pocket watch has Swiss hallmarks for 935 silver and probably dates to around 1910.

This chatelaine is in beautiful condition. I can find no damage or repairs to the clip and the decorative detail is very crisp. There is no damage to the links of the chains and all the dog clips are in good working order. The notebook has no damage to the silver but the outer leaves are very browned with age. The silver of the pincushion is in good order but the velvet of the cushion has worn down to the base material.

There's no damage to the pencil and it's in good working order. The button hook and blade have some areas of blackening to the steel.

Apart from the missing glass and the fact it's not working, the watch is in very good condition. Please be aware that, after 132 years, there will be some tiny surface abrasions caused through use. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN PAGE TO SEE MORE IMAGES Approximate Measurements. Length - 16.8 cm 6.
