UNGER Heraldic STERLING SILVER Chatelaine Mirror Pin Needle Holder Knight Sewing

  

Interesting and whimsical Sterling silver Chatelaine piece by Unger Brothers with multiple uses. On the back side there is a mirror, convenient for use on a chatelaine, around the edges of the disc are little holes to hold about 20 pins or needles for sewing, and then of course the front side with the repousse image depicting a heraldic pattern with knights helmet for decorative purposes. The hallmarks were punched when the holes for the pins and needles were added after the silver was made, but they are there. RLING and on the hole next to it, most of the interlocking Unger UB hallmark was punched through, but you can make it out on the edge as seen in the photo under magnification. Comparable examples by Unger have also been seen in this form as an item they did make.

The mirror is cloudy and spotted from age where the back reflective side of the mirror has deteriorated. The ring attached to the piece to affix it to a chain is brass colored so not sterling like the piece itself and the sterling loop on the piece. I don't really see any pin dings, it seems to have held its shape well. But due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item. Lots of years left in this highly collectible item.

Piece is 1 3/4 inches in diameter and about 5/8 of an inch thick. It weighs 18 grams but remember that includes the mirror. Very interesting and scarce piece!
