An extremely rare & collectable Victorian sterling silver shooting medal competed for at Bisley in 1898 by teams from Oxford University & Cambridge University for the prestigious Chancellors Plate. Cambridge University were the victors in 1898 with the silver medal for sale being awarded to S. Andrews of Caius College, Cambridge.
The silver medal is in its original moulded presentation case by D. Munsey, Goldsmiths of Cambridge and also included is an original photograph showing the victorious Cambridge University team from 1898 with their silver trophy, the Chancellors Plate, in front of them. It was believed that S.
Andrews was the gentleman seated second left (highlighted) but I cannot be certain. NOTE: This photograph will frame up well with any historical damage to the mount being hidden within the frame. The silver medal itself is in an unusual cruciform shape embossed with the crests of both Oxford University & Cambridge University.Below the crests are the letters "O" & "C" intertwined for Oxford & Cambridge. OXFORD & CAMBRIDGE CHANCELLORS PLATE. Also included are some selective Wikipedia page printouts relating to the history of shooting at Cambridge University which provide the history of the Chancellors' Challenge Plate and which also confirm the trophy was won by Cambridge in 1898.
Sterling Silver Medal: Weight: 66.4 gm. Dimensions: 70 mm x 70 mm. The Chancellors' Challenge Plate: In 1862, the chancellors of Oxford & Cambridge universities agreed to award a trophy for a shooting match between the two universities: a silver plate set into a large silver stein (see photo). The first match was held in 1862 and won by Cambridge. It is still competed for today with Cambridge the current holders. Summary:Victorian winner's medals from The Chancellors' Challenge Plate rarely come up for sale and this is a superb example which incredibly comes with its original presentation case and an original photograph of the winning team.
A great item of shooting memorabilia.
