Sampson Mordan Carved Horn Beaker. A fine Victorian period carved horn (bovine) and silver beaker by Sampson Mordan & Co. It is beautifully carved with flowers and a variety of birds.
It has a silver rim with griffin head crest. The base features a glass disk which is an interesting and unusual feature. The hallmarks are part rubbed but can still be made out as London 1882.
The style takes influence from the Aesthetic and the design works very nicely with the natural material. The silver mount was made to fit the item so undulates a little adding extra charm. We have been unable to find reference to any other examples like this aside the few we have suggesting they are quite rare. Partial rubbing of hall marks but still legible.Horn good with minor wear, light scratches etc and minor natural flaws as expected. Silver with normal period wear, light scratches and miniscule indents around the rim. Width: 5.7 cm (2 /14 inch) across rim. Height: 8.7 cm (3 3/8 inch).
Weight: 76 grams (before packing). If for any reason you are unhappy with your item please let us know as soon as possible, and we will do our best to put things right. This item is in the category "Antiques\Silver\Solid Silver\Other Solid Silver".
