Large Antique Victorian Silver Teniers Bowl 1872

  
This substantial piece of Victorian sterling silver was made by John Wilmin Figg and hallmarked in London 1872. It was probably made as a very large sugar bowl but its size and weight gives multiple uses including a small centrepiece. Teniers was a Dutch artist specialising in tavern and other scenes of merriment and this beautifully decorated piece fully reflects that.

It stands firmly on 4 ornate figure/shell feet and has a gilded interior. The entire bowl is decorated with the two principal scenes being a group outside a tavern, inevitably drinking and another group playing dominos. The elaborate handles represent branches of trees each handle topped with a figure also in some form of drinking revellry. The bowl is in very good condition with no damage or repair and has been made with a very heavy gauge of silver. Hallmarks are clearly struck to the base.
