DELIGHTFUL VICTORIAN SOLID SILVER BIRD (WREN) POUNCE POT-SHAKER. This is a wonderful Victorian Solid Silver Novelty Bird (Wren) Pounce Pot - Shaker, this was crafted by the world renowned Victorian silversmith Sampson Mordan, it was Assayed in Chester in 1899 making it 122 years old, the detailing to the Wren (Bird) is stunning so finely crafted with hand chased decoration to show the detailing to the Birds feathers, even his wings are detailed and he has a wonderful curled up tail, his little face and beak is lovely , to the top of his pull off head you will see the holes from which the pounce would have been shaken and sprinkled on the wet ink , this would speed up the drying of the wet ink, he is fully hallmarked to the base and has matching hallmarks to his collar on the neck, not only is this a rare Sampson Mordan pounce pot but it was also assayed in Chester, this assay mark is becoming rare as the chester office closed in the early 1960's, he is in wonderful condition, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have belonged to a wealthy family and been used daily in a time when letter writing was the only form of communication, this was in a time when things were so very different, it is so very tactile and once held it is hard to place back down.
