Beautiful Victorian Silver Letter Opener as Scottish Basket-Hilt Broadsword 1901

  

On offer is a stunning example of a Victorian silver letter opener / paper knife modeled as a basket-hilted broadsword. The piece carries a full set of very crisp hallmarks (on the blade) showing. Silversmith: JWK initials for John William Kirwan. Lion Passant: for Sterling Silver. Anchor: for Birmingham Assay Office.

Date letter b: for 1901. The blade is also stamped on both sides with the name ANDRRIA FARARE, which was obviously a nod to the famous 18. And the fact that (according to Sir Walter Scott) t.

Was inscribed "on all the Scottish broadswords that are accounted of peculiar excellence". The basket guard is simply stamped with the lion and year letter. For a piece that is 120 years old it is still in an overall lovely condition but will show some age related wear. The material that would be intended to cushion the hand is still present and intact but does show signs of age. This is a larger and heavier piece than you normally find it is just short of 21cm in length (a touch over 8 inches), and weighs approximately 39.7g in total.
