BEAUTIFUL RARE LARGE VICTORIAN HANAU SOLID SILVER CHERUB COACH OPEN SALT. This is a Stunning fine quality Rare Large Victorian Solid Silver Highly Ornate Cherub- Putti & Coach Open Salt, This Beautiful Ornate Open Salt is stunning, it is hallmarked to the base though im not sure who the maker is, i say it may be Hanau and Victorian circa 1880 making it over 130 years old at least but this also may be a very early mark making it many years older, these large silver novelty salts were very popular in the Georgian period, this is off a large size and has been crafted wonderfully, the detailing is stunning, the large round shape open coach has the most wonderful ornate scroll and scallop shape to the edges, to one side crafted within a scroll ornate cartouche you will see two beautiful cherubs playing , they are so very detailed, then to the other side again another two little cherubs playing together with houses in the background, to the back of the coach you will see a cast scroll work thumb piece which is to be used to push the coach across the table with the wheels working as a coach would, the wheels still turn smoothly as they should allowing the cherubs and coach open salt to move smoothly down the table, now to the front you will see one cherub sitting on the front of the coach as though driving it, he is lovely, the coach is then being pulled by the most adorable cherub , he has wonderful features and has flowers in his hair and a flower garland across his body, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a very wealthy family and would have sat on a large dining table and been pushed along the table to be used by the diners as the wheels still turn beautifully, to the base it carries the hallmarks, though im not to sure where its originates from, maybe German im not to sure , if this open salt could talk i can just imagine what fascinating stories it could tell, this is so very tactile and once held it has the most wonderful feel. This will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice.

You will not find another like this on the market its so very special and extremely rare. It is of a large size and has a good weight. Circa 1880 though could be earlier. 11 cm from front to back....

Lovely, the cherub sitting on the coach may have had a silver wire going down to the front handle, though im not sure, just mentioned for accuracy.
