Antique Victorian Solid Silver Postal Scale, Levi & Salaman, Birmingham, 1898

  

Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Postal Scale, Levi & Salaman (L & S), Birmingham (anchor), 1898 (letter y). Stamped Rd 308820 (registered design). The base measures 50mm x 80mm and the scale stands approx 80mm high. The scale to the front is ivorine, synthesised material developed in Victorian times.

The photos will do much of the explanation here as I have covered most angles. I have not played with the adjusting screw for fear of causing damage. The weight arrow indicator is slightly depressed below the 0 mark but it does respond to weight on the tray above and is still connected to the spring/plunger. The weighing tray has become slightly depressed over the underlying pillar support and this shows faintly (not on the photo). The felt on the underside looks like it has been re-glued to the base so I cannot be certain that it is the original.

The top RHS of the ivorine scale is slightly lifted above the retaining lip of silver. The ivorine scale has (possibly) been glued to or has naturally stuck to the silver as it is not loose/mobile which it should be.

Again, I would rather not interfere with this piece. All said, the scale is in quite good condition though it's a shame the ivorine scale is somewhat worn.
