Antique Solid Silver Huntsmans Sandwich Box, Charles Fox, London 1890

  
A Victorian Silver Sandwich Box by Charles Fox. A rare late Victorian period solid silver sandwich box. It was made by Charles Fox of London and has the London assay mark with date letter for 1890 with repeat marks on the lid and end panel. The box is of elegant plain form and in keeping with the intended use it is of heavy gauge silver. The silver is gilt washed to help prevent oxidisation from the food. The box is double hinged to allow the lid to open flat making for easier access to the sandwich inside.

Items like this were of course only for the very wealthy at the time and a way of showing your prosperity. It was also likely intended for use during riding or hunting and such pieces are also sometimes called huntsman's boxes. As well as the original use today you can use them for many purposes and they make fine desk boxes, or for cigars as examples. Very good order for period, light scratches. Scuffs and scratches to the base consistent with light use.

A tiny indent to the top only visible in angled light. A few very slight edge nicks. Height: 1 cm (1 3/4 inches). Length: 13.3 cm (5 1/4 inches). Breadth: 8.3 cm (3 1/4 inches).
