Antique silver mounted Thermometer, Levi & Salaman, Birmingham, 1901. Mounted on an ivorine notched backing showing centigrade and fahrenheit scales. The silver is C scrolled, floral and fruit on trellis pattern. The cartouche bulbs have no monograms.
The thermometer bulb is protected by a brass mounting and the thermometer is functional although I cannot verify if it is properly calibrated/acccurate. It should be within a degree or two of the ambient temperature as these pieces were well made. The silver is in fair condition with some pinprick polishing holes. The backing material is frayed/corroded and has been repaired by a similar weave material to allow the stand to work. The repair does not match the original but the thermometer can still be used as a desktop instrument. On the visible side the piece is attractive and in fair to good condition though the rear mounting is well worn. Nonetheless these pieces are rare due to their fragility and thermometer glass is easily broken after a century+. A fabulous gift for someone who has many things but would appreciate this touch.
