Antique Heath Middleton Victorian Snake Handled Silver Claret Jug 1897

  

This tall Victorian unusual claret jug was made by Heath & Middleton. The silver collar and lid are sterling silver and hallmarked for London 1897. It has been made with clear glass , is trumpet shaped with a very dramatic green glass snake entwined around the body and providing a substantial handle. Hallmarks both to the body and lid are clearly struck. The claret jug is in very good condition with no repair but for accuracy the tip of the snake's tail (no more than 1cms - possibly less) is missing but hardly noticeable.

The lid is raised by a silver wire handle and the mechanism works perfectly. (NB any shadows shown in the photographs are merely reflections). Height 31 cms (12.5 ins).
