On offer is a truly splendid solid silver inkstand in the Neo-Classical style. The piece takes the form of a lamp with a swan-necked/mythical creature forming the handle which secures the silver lid by means of a silver chain. It is decorated with simple scrolls and bordered with a Greek Key pattern.

It has holders for a dip/Quill pen and two thin candles/ taper. S This is a unique looking piece, and I can honestly say that over the years I have only ever seen a few in this style and all have been purely the lamp, but this is the only one I have come across with the integrated pen tray. Please note that the pens are not included in this Sale; they are included for illustrative purposes only. Each section (base, lamp and lid) is fully hallmarked (some hallmarks are very crisp and others show some sign of rubbing) and shows that it was Assayed in London in 1857 by the Silversmiths George John Richards and Edward Charles Brown. Althouthatgh previously silversmiths in their own right 1857 was the first year of their partnership.

Brown was an Apprentice under Richards, and another notable Apprentice who served under. Richards was the famous William Comyns. By the time the partnership was formed they were already based at 20 Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, in London. The piece has been engraved with a presentation as well as an Armorial. Presented to the Rev'd John Watson as a Token of Affectionate Esteem of the Parish of'Balsham'?

It is a splendid piece which is still in excellent condition for a piece that is over 160 years old. The silver is free of any dents or damage, the only issue is with the glass inkwell which is permanently fixed within the well. It is beautifully engraved with flowers, but it does have a small chip towards the edge which I have tried to show in the photos (visible in photo 8). It is a substantial piece, weighing approximately 15oz (approx 425g), and the base measures approximately 23 cm x 19 cm x 9 cm high.
