Superbly decorated, huge Victorian sterling silver goblet profusely engraved with a floral design and internally gilded. The goblet has been engraved as an agricultural trophy at the prestigious Smithfield Show in 1886 as a prize for Blackfaced Suffolk Sheep. Both cartouches are attractively engraved and the first is engraved. The second cartouche is engraved.

"AWARDED TO Edward Gittus OF SNAILWELL FOR THE BEST BLACKFACED SUFFOLK SHEEP". Around the rim of the goblet there is a further dedication engraving. AMBROSE OF SWAFFHAM PRIOR BY MRS EDWARD GITTUS AND MRS A. IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE LATE EDWARD GITTUS OF SNAILWELL AND NEWMARKET.

Diameter of rim: 145 mm. Diameter of base: 105 mm. Maker's Mark: Martin Hall & Co (Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall).

Reed & Son, Cambridge (stamped to base). Smithfield Show: Widely recognised as the most prestigious fat stock show held in Britain.

The Smithfield Show, formerly the Smithfield Club Cattle & Sheep Show and later the Royal Smithfield Show, was an annual British agricultural show, organised by the Royal Smithfield Club. It was founded in 1799 and was first held at Wootton's Livery Stables in Dolphin Yard, Smithfield, London.

From 1862 to 1938 it was held at the purpose-built Agricultural Hall in Islington, London. From 1949 it was held at Earls Court Exhibition Centre in Earls Court, London. The last show was held there in 2004, the last major livestock show held in London.

The Royal Smithfield Club was named for Smithfield Market, the centre of meat distribution in London. The show was for fat stock, meat breeds of livestock. Snailwell: A small village in East Cambridgeshire near Newmarket.

Summary: This huge, attractively-engraved Victorian sterling silver trophy goblet is one of the best of its kind I have found. What makes it even more collectable is the fact that it was presented by the prestigious Smithfield Show, Britain's most pre-eminent agricultural livestock show.
