Rare & stunning 9ct rose gold Victorian rowing medal hallmarked Chester 1895 by Joseph Fray. This large, heavy prize medal depicts two Victorian rowers in straw boaters hold an oar either side of a raised shield engraved with the monogram of the winning rower "WE".

WINNER OF THE CHRISTMAS BOAT Handicap 1895. Included with the medal is a printout of the front & relevant pages from the website "North East Rowing On-Line" which provides a fascinating history of rowing in the north east of England. As can be seen from the 1895 entry, W.
Emmett won the Cook and Winship's Christmas Handicap Final which was competed for on the River Tune, Newcastle. The medal for sale is the medal presented to W. Emmett for winning this race. You will note that his club is described as "HRC" which probably relates to Hexham Rowing Club but I cannot be certain. Maker's Mark: Joseph Fray.
