VICTORIAN SILVER 19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE CHATELAINE. VICTORIAN SILVER 19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE CHATELAINE We are pleased to be able to offer this stunning Victorian five chain Solid Silver Ladies Chatelaine which I would estimate dates to circa 1870 making it nearly 150 years old, the design and decoration is beautiful, to the top the pierced oval mount with a dome shape which in turn has an embossed crossed torches, quiver and bow decoration. This has five chains suspended from the oval mount, these have no hallmarks soI will say white metal, to the end of each of the chain you will see many useful items. The first you will see is a beautiful rectangle solid silver pin cushion with the most wonderful ornate embossed decoration of flowers, foliage and scroll, this has a blank cartouche to the centre, its hallmarked Levi & Salaman, Birmingham 1901 making it Victorian, 10 grams weight...
The next is a very pretty Bucket Shape Thimble Holder and thimble again embossed with wonderful scrolls and foliage, this I cant find a hallmark so will say white metal, this weighs 12.3 gram.... Next to this is the most beautiful pair of solid silver scissors and original solid silver scissor case, the handles have the most ornate embossed decoration, now on to the case itself, if you look to the front you will see a stunning embossed face of the green man which was a very popular form of decoration in the mid Victorian period, this in turn is surrounded by ornate scrolls and foliage, this is solid silver but I cant find a hallmark, it may be hidden somewhere within the ornate decoration, they are stunning and weigh 30 grams.
The next you will see is a wonderful sterling silver Victorian Envelope StampHolder crafted beautifully in the form of a letter with a very pretty hinged top, this is marked sterling, 925 and weighs 6.2 grams. The other attachment with it is a wonderful solid silver and mother of pearl Thomas Marples letter opener which is hallmarked for Sheffield 1893 the weight is 8.6 grams. Finally the wonderful little Edwardian Solid Silver button hook with its delicate yet very pretty decoration this is hallmarked for Sidney & Co Birmingham 1904 and weighs 4.4 grams. The Quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a wealthy Victorian household and been used daily by either the lady of the house or her house keeper, this Chatelaine would have been clipped over the ladies waste band and would have hung down ready to be used , this was in a time many years ago when things were so very different, this has a wonderful feel and is so very tactile, this will add something special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice The Chatelaine A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it.
Each chain is mounted with useful household appendages such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, vinaigrette, and household seals. Chatelaines were worn by many housekeepers in the 19th century. The name chatelaine derives from the French term châtelaine and was originally used disparagingly, as it referred to a device designed to have all the tools necessary for the woman of the household to sort out any problem she may encounter in her day, like a fraying curtain. An unquestionably exquisite and fine addition for any uncompromising collector or as a display piece. All Antique silver items will show some signs of wear, which only adds to the history of the object.....
