Harlequin set: knife fork, spoon and case. Knife weighs 38g and measures approx 192mm (With filled handle). Fork and spoon weigh approx 62g, Spoon length 165mm, Fork length approx. Knife Hallmarked on the blade for Sheffield (crown) in 1862 (letter u) bearing the head of Queen Victoria and the lion for sterling silver.

HW & Co in a shield, the mark of Henry Wilkinson & Co. The marks are rubbed but legible. The handle shows the crown and sterling marks but they are well rubbed. The knife is silver bladed with filled silver handle. The handle has traces of pitch/adhesive at the joint with the blade and has likely been repaired at some point.

The fork and spoon are double stamped i. To both front and rear of the stems with a kings pattern variant. The fork and spoon have an unusual acanthus leaf pattern. Not often seen with a King's pattern stamping.

They are hallmarked for London by makers Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater and dated L & M for 1846 & 1847. The spoon has been repaired in the middle of the stem (pictured) and the fork has beginnings of a stress crack in the same area. The case interior is good but there are signs of scuffing to the exterior and some peeling to the paper on the hinge side of the case.

The case carries a monogram which differ from the single initial of the silver trio and it is probable that they did not come with this case. Nonetheless they fit into the maroon velvet quite comfortably. The item "Silver knife fork spoon set cased Victorian 1840s & 1862 Harlequin set a/f" is in sale since Thursday, December 3, 2020.
