RARE 19TH CENTURY VIENNESE SILVER GILT HAND PAINTED ENAMEL PEAR SHAPE VINAIGRETTE. This is a Beautiful Extremely Rare 19th Century Victorian Solid Silver Gilt Hand Painted Enamel Pear Shape Vinaigrette, it was crafted by the highly sought after Victorian silversmith. Samuel Goldfarb it was crafted in Vienna Austria in circa 1880. Making it over 140 years old. It has such a fine and elegant quality, the body of this wonderful Vinaigrette has been crafted in Enamel in the form of a Pear with the most beautiful hand painted scene to the body and hinged top, you will see a lovely couple in love, with a gentleman sitting playing a lute to the lady sitting in front of him, it is a romantic scene and the clothes they are wearing are stunning, they are in a counrtyside setting with trees, foliage and buildings in the background, this is finished with a lovely blue sky with delicate clouds, to the top is also has a very similar scene, this is then framed with a stunning silver gilt banding with dotted decoration, to the top it has a silver gilt ball finial which is framed with flower petals, to the other end again it has silver gilt flower petals and a silver gilt loop for hand i would say with a ribbon around the ladies neck, on opening this stunning Pear shape Vinaigrette you will see the interior is framed to both the top and bottom with a silver gilt banding, the grill is a pull off and again is finied in silver gilt the decoration to the grill is stunning from its square shpe which inturn entwines in and out of the open petal shapes, and to the centre it again has a ball finial, the inside of the Enamel Vinaigrette is finished in the most beautiful powder pink colour which is breath taking, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this form of enamel Vinaigrette is extremely rare and the condition is wonderful, the enamel body has no damage with only a fire hairling to the inside, the hinge is all there but one side has come away from the body and could be put right very easily, just mentioned for accuracy, this wonderful rare Vinaigrette would have once belonged to a wealthy lady in the 19th century and been worn around her neck using a ribbon, she would have used this every day when out in the town, it would have contained a small sponge with scented oil or even dry spices to help when out and about, this was many years ago when this were so very different, you will not find another of this date on the market.
This will add something very rare and special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice at all, its stunning. Walking through the streets of Vienna during the twilight days of the Hapsburg Empire was a pretty stinky business. Thankfully Samuel Goldfarb was on hand to assist wealthy ladies who wanted to mask the smells of the streets. He produced delightful little scent lockets known as "vinaigrettes" in which a perfume soaked sponge was placed to delight the nostrils of anyone nearby. This is a particularly fine example of Viennese vinaigrette.
The enamel work is stunning! Each side features a courting couple.
The lid opens and closes with precision and the finely worked grill can be lifted to reveal the original interior! Signed'SG' for Samuel Goldfarb and'A' for Austro-Hungary. 4 cm length including the loop....
