We are offering for sale an excellent quality Victorian period silver entree dish with interesting engraving. Consisting of a base dish and a cover with removable handle to form a pair of serving dishes, this fine oblong entree dish has a gadroon border around both dish sections and again around the top of the cover.

The original handle is superbly formed in the naturalistic manner as leafy scrolls with fruit. It has a good heavy weight and oozes high quality.

The top section is superbly engraved to one side with a coat of arms surmounted by an eagle's crest and the motto " Viget In Cinere Virtus " which translates to "virtue flourishes after death". This is the armorial and motto of the Davidson clan. The other side bears the engraved inscription: " Presented to David Davidson Esquire by the local board of the Montreal branch and the inspector of the Bank of British North America on the occasion of his retirement from that institution as a small token of their regard ".

The Bank of British North America was founded in 1836 and had branches throughout Canada, plus in New York and San Francisco. It merged with the Bank of Montreal in 1918. The inscription is worthy of further research!

This entree dish fits together nicely and is in fine condition throughout with crisp engraving and bold decoration.
