148 Piece SILVER LANCASHIRE PATTERN CANTEEN CUTLERY, London 1837 & 1894-99. Lancashire Pattern (12 place settings). London 1837 by Benoni Stephens.

& 1894-99 by Carrington & Company. 11,500 grams (370 troy ounces) + 24 knives with stainless steel blades. We are pleased to be offering an.

Outstanding quality and extensive dining service in a very rare and unique flatware pattern. We have called it the Lancashire Pattern in homage to the provenance (see below). The canteen will accommodate up to 12 place settings, plus we have plenty more dining pieces in stock.

There is also a fabulous range of large serving items. This silver service dates from 1837, the year the UK moved from the Georgian period in to the Victorian era following Victoria's crowning as Queen.

Every piece bears the same regimental crest with motto (see below). All the spoons, forks and servers were hand-wrought by either the specialist flatware maker Benoni Stephens in 1837 or by Carrington & Company during the 1890s. The interesting inscription on the large palette knife (see below), suggest that the whole service was overhauled in 1894 and pieces were either replaced or added to by Carrington & Company.

The large table spoons are the traditional oval-bowled soup spoon, but have the bonus of being ideal for serving purposes too. The teaspoons are a good large size and nowadays are often used for small portion desserts such as mousse and creme brulee. The 24 table forks allow one dozen to be used in combination with the fish knives, whilst the others are for the main course. The so-called fruit eaters are an extra bonus and allow flexibility to be used with either a dessert or starter. All the serving items are just a joy to handle as they have each have a satisfying hefty weight to them.

The big spoons really ooze high quality, whilst the asparagus servers have a multitude of potential uses. The large palette knife is an extremely rare piece and gives wonderful evidence of the sets provenance.

The silver handled table and dessert knives were all made by Carrington & Company and are fitted with best quality Sheffield-made stainless steel blades with Carrington engraved to the blades. This is a superb dinner service with all pieces having a lovely feel in the hand and just exuding the best quality! This pattern was made exclusively for the 20. Regiment of Foot, later Lancashire fusiliers, and as such we have named it Lancashire Pattern. Each piece has been made with dies that include the regimental badge to the terminals.

It is an extremely rare pattern (we have never previously encountered a single piece) and this represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a complete service. The double-struck nature of the pattern i.

Pattern on both sides ensures that a good gauge of silver was used in manufacture and each piece therefore has a hefty feel in the hand. This service bears the gartered crest and motto of the 20. The motto reads: Omnia Audax (Daring in all things). Following the Childers Reforms of 1881, the regiment became known as the Lancashire Fusiliers and was based at the Wellington Barracks in Bury. The service was originally used in the officers mess. The large palette knife in this service was made in London 1894 by Carrington & Co and bears the following engraved inscription. This knife was made from the silver handles.

Of the cheese knives which had been in use. During the 1880s and 90s the 1. Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers were based in Ireland.

Interestingly the battalion were stationed in Malta from 1901 and the fish knives bear Maltese 935 standard silver marks. This 148-piece service consists of the following. 2 long handled Serving Spoons. The total weight of weighable silver is. Additional to this weight are the 24 silver handled table and dessert knives. There are a large number of extra pieces from the original service available. This includes dining pieces in varying numbers and further large servers duplicating some of the above. This service has been restored and polished to an attractive, practical condition. The regimental crest is a little rubbed in places, but overall these pieces have survived well. This canteen is supplied in 11 anti-tarnish cutlery rolls with each roll holding 12 items. The servers are supplied loose.
