This is an antique dressing case. The silver lidded hatpin holder was assayed in 1846 in London and the maker a woman named Frances Douglas who made silver topped vanity pieces.

The box and lids may be of Asian Indian origin. The box is wood, hinged with inlaid stringing surrounding a mother of pearl cartouche with the initials of the original owner FEL. The inside of the lid dark pink velvet in a gilded and embossed leather frame.

Inside the top there is a silver plated clip that opens to allow a writing pad to fold down. In the back of the lid is an area to store private correspondence. The lock has a patent and a VR symbol but no key.

The top layer has 13 sections comprising. Shallow box with an embossed pink velvet lid and a mother of pearl knob. 2 x deeper boxes similarly lidded. 1x larger shallow box with pink silk lining and a silk tag opener.

2 small shallow open boxes. One has an 1846 silver lidded cut glass rouge pot made in London by Ann Reid. Its interesting that the silver makers are both female.

There are 2 shallow boxes with cut glass perfume bottles. These have unmarked lids which may be plated. The Hatpin holder has a glass base and the silver lid garlands of flowers with pierced flower centres. There 3 deep square boxes. One has a cut glass cologne bottle.

It has a glass stopper and unmarked lid. There would probably have originally have been bottles in the open boxes. A secret silk lined drawer is revealed by lifting the knob as shown in the photos. The silk lining to one of 3 sections is torn. The top tray lifts of to reveal a deep section.
